- Carpet Textures
Before we get into textures, it’s important to understand how carpet is constructed. Carpet is made by repeatedly looping yarn through a backing material in a motion similar to sewing with a needle and thread. The carpet’s overall texture is determined by the length of the loops of yarn, variations to the pattern they’re in, whether they’re tightly or loosely twisted, and whether the loops are cut, left intact, or a combination of both.
Plush
One of the most common carpet textures in homes is plush carpet. It is a cut loop pile with a flat, even crop which gives this carpet a soft texture that still maintains its shape. It is soft and comfortable and a great option for any level of foot-traffic.
Saxony
Saxony carpet has a longer, cut loop pile. The deep, soft fiber loops are densely packed and stand straighter than frieze tufts. This classical style is plush and comfortable to walk on, but shows footprints easily, so it is best for formal areas with minimal foot traffic.
Frieze
Like Saxony, frieze is a longer cut loop pile, but its tightly twisted piles lie in various directions creating a less uniform, more casual look. It is very thick, plush and durable and does not show signs of wear, works well in high traffic areas. Shag is a longer variation of a frieze carpet.
Berber
Berber carpet is traditionally a made up of level loops of thicker yarn that make it very durable. It will not show footprints or other imprints and is great for high traffic areas. Berber is most often available in neutral shades flecked with additional colors. These color variations help to hide dirt and stains.
Patterns
Additional carpet textures can be created by combining piles of different heights or even combining cut and intact loops. Typically this is done to create a visible geometric pattern in a single-color carpet, setting a contemporary, upscale tone.
